The final sale of the 2018 mohair season took place on 4 December with 80,463 kg on offer.
The average market indicator softened by 3.9% from the previous sale, to close on R278.97 p/kg, with 97.8% of the offering sold.
The SA currency traded 3.3% stronger against the US dollar, which exercised negative pressure on the mixed offering available at the sale. Although there were some good individual clips on offer, the quality was not as good as the previous sale.
A highest price of R510.00 p/kg was paid for a bale of good style 24 micron kid mohair. The average market indicator for the winter season came in at R289.88 p/kg, 36% higher than the 2017 winter season. The 2018 year average was also 38% higher than 2017.
The effect of the drought can also still be seen in the decrease in auction volumes this year.
Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: Kids (winter) down 1.8%. Young Goats (winter) down 3.2%. Fine Adults down 5%. Strong Adults down 3.7%. Average down 3.9%.
