With flushability and single-use plastics hitting the headlines more and more, there is an increasing amount of pressure on companies to develop sustainable and environmentally-friendly products.

The wipes currently retail for £4 and can be found in Tesco Food stores in the UK

Simple, a British skincare brand, is the latest company to announce the launch of its new Biodegradable Cleansing Wipes.

The brand’s latest range is said to remain gentle on the skin and kind to the planet but is still merciless on make-up, including stubborn waterproof mascara.

“At Simple, we understand that face wipes have an impact on our planet, so as the UK’s number one brand of face wipes, we wanted to lead the way and create the first biodegradable face wipes in the mass market,” says Georgina Bradford, marketing director, Skin Care UKI.

Simple’s Biodegradable Cleansing Wipes are made of soft, renewable plant fibres and sustainable wood pulp. And just like the company’s other products, they are suitable for sensitive skin, too.

“We know many consumers want the convenience of using a face wipe and don’t want to have to choose between the right cleansing and being kind to the planet – which is why we’ve added this new option to our range,” adds Bradford.

What’s more, the wipes leave no greasy residue on the skin and are packed with triple purified water, gentle cleaners and multivitamins to lift impurities and make-up.

The wipes currently retail for £4 and can be found in Tesco Food stores in the UK.

What else is available?

There are brands out there that offer biodegradable cleansing wipes, although being more environmentally conscious does comes with a slightly increased price tag.

Klorane offers biodegradable wipes made from cornflower floral water that helps to soothe and decongest the skin. The cornflower is cultivated according to AB-certified organic farming methods in France. A pack of 25 wipes retails for £7.50.

Yes To also has a reasonable range of eco-friendly face wipes. The company was created in the US in 2006 by two friends who wanted to create a super-natural beauty range that was made from fruit and vegetables. The range includes wipes made from tomatoes, cucumber, charcoal, coconut and grapefruit. The recommended retail price for Yes To’s face wipes is £4.99 for a pack of 30.

The Beauty Kitchen offers a range of Abyssinian Oil Sustainable Beauty Wipes, too. A pack of 30 retails for £5.99 and they are vegan friendly as well as compostable. The wipes are made from organic cotton and 100% natural ingredients.

A recent report by Smithers Pira states that the global nonwoven wipes market is very successful and by 2023 it is projected to reach a value of US$21.8bn. Currently, the market is valued at US$16.6bn, with the forecast period exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.7%.

While this growth is largely attributed to growing consumer demand, investment in sustainable solutions is identified as another key driver. With this in mind, more and more brands may start to follow in Simple’s footsteps to offer a larger range of biodegradable and sustainable solutions to consumers’ skincare routine.
