There have been several large wildfires reported in the news this summer, including fires that have spread across California in the US, the Algarve in Portugal and across Sweden in the Arctic Circle. The increasing presence of these fires means that homeowners at risk may need to start thinking of ways to mitigate the impacts of such incidents.

Komodo Ultimate Fire Shield is an advanced fire prevention and containment technology made available for homeowners. The Komodo product line is available in multiple form factors for textile fabric, cellulosic materials, vegetation, wood, steel and foam.

The products are water based, biodegradable solutions that are non-toxic to vegetation and wildlife and they are now available on Amazon.com for defence against brush and structure fires.

Komodo is the latest in fire prevention and protection technology that is enabling property owners as well as county, state and federal agencies to combat out-of-control fires by stopping a fire in its tracks.

K-100 Perimeter Shield and K-300 Wood Shield are available on the online retail site along with homeowner do-it-yourself kits that help neutralise treated areas against fire hazard. Eco-friendly Komodo products are said to create buffer barriers and protected zones, shielding structures and other high value areas from rapidly expanding wildfires.

At a recent demonstration burn at Chandler Hill Winery in Defiance, Missouri, US, the products’ effectiveness on vegetation, wood and physical structures was proven. The burn was observed by state officials, government dignitaries and local fire departments, and provided measurable performance improvements over traditional water, gel and foam technologies. All tests proved that Komodo can be utilised as an effective active and passive retardant, where the contained fire did not burn or ignite any of the areas treated with Komodo.

“It’s amazing how the fire was contained and did not encroach treated areas. I’ve never seen anything like that before and I’m excited about the impact that Komodo is hopefully going to have within our department and throughout the country in the future,” says a spokesperson from the Augusta Fire Department at the demonstration.

Komodo Ultimate Fire Shield was recognised as a Platinum Sponsor at the 2018 Northeastern Area Association of State Foresters Convention in in June 2018. The products offered regional firefighters and forestry professionals an alternative, green technology for fighting fires previously not available to first responders.

Fire-retardant coatings market

The global flame-retardant market was valued at US$6.29bn in 2015 and it is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9% from 2016 to 2025, according to a report published in the Additives for Polymers journal. The market is also predicted to touch US$11.96bn by 2025.

The growth is thought to be fuelled by the increasing awareness of fire safety norms and regulations, according to Markets and Markets. Additionally, the rise in end-use industries in emerging markets, the growing demand for passive fire protection and the lower maintenance cost compared to active fire protection systems are helping to expand the global flame-retardant market.
